The fact that Lauren Conrad‘s first novel was a fictional tale but loosely based on her life, was both good and bad.
Good because the reader was able to see what goes on behind the scenes of theHills. We’re sure the production element of L.A. Candy, the reality show in the book, is the same. After all, how many ways can one depict a fake reality show?
Bad because the reader spends the whole time reading the book trying to figure out which fictional characters are “loosely” based on which real life characters. It sort of interrupts the reading of the plotline.
Where Lauren was successful, is mixing and matching characteristics and events so that it seems like all the elements of her reality life are in the book, but they don’t match up exactly to theHills. In other words, the characters have traits of more than one Hills cast member.
We took a stab at the inspiration behind the L.A. Candy characters.
Jane Roberts- Lauren.
Lauren has admitted to “relating” to Jane the most. She’s the “everyday girl” whose life is central to the reality show. She’s the star.
Scarlett’s depiction smacks of Lo mainly because Jane and Lo have been friends for so long. Also, Scarlett is very intelligent and graduated from USC, much like Lo who attended UCLA. The only similarities Scarlett has to Heidi is that Scarlett moves to LA with Jane and rooms with her, like Heidi did with Lauren. Another possible Heidi trait is that Scarlett is sharp tongued and speaks her mind. It’s hard to remember Heidi before Spencer, but we do remember an outgoing vocal girl. Scarlett is also depicted as being so strikingly beautiful that everyone comments on it. Lo is just now coming into her beauty, and although she looks great, she’s not the most beautiful girl in LA. Then again, neither is Heidi, right?
Madison is the Heidi figure in that she starts the photo scandal that causes Jane to crumble. Obviously this is like the sex tape rumor Lauren blames Heidi and her boyfriend Spencer for creating. Perhaps even more telling is that Madison wants to be a star at any and all costs. Audrina also desperately wants to be a star but she chose the classier route- getting her own reality show and not mudslinging Lauren.
Gaby is Audrina because she’s not the brightest crayon in the box. Actually, she’s a flat out airhead with bird brains.
The guys are harder to pin down because Lauren gets really creative with them. Jesse is the son of celebrities like Brody. But he’s also a bad boy who drinks to the point of no good like Jason. Jesse is a guy who doesn’t mind being filmed on reality TV.
Braden is definitely inspired by Kyle because Braden’s a serious actor who can’t be on the reality show because his agent said TV producers won’t take him seriously. Kyle Howard, of course, is on My Boys scripted show and notoriously (and to the shagrin of Hills fans everywhere) hasn’t appeared on theHills despite dating Lauren for the past year. There are differences though. Kyle is not friends with anyone on theHills and Braden and Jesse were best buds. Their friendship actually closely resembles that of Brody and Spencer. You get the messiness of it all?
Braden could have some Brody traits too. Besides the obvious similarity in names Lauren has a great connection with Braden both romantic and as friends. They like each other but Braden has an on-again off-again girlfriend in Willow (who could be numerous Brody women- maybe Cora Skinner?).
Paolo is the photographer guy who asked Jane out at her job because the producers asked him to. Jane thinks he’s a good guy, but on the date there were “no sparks”. That’s verbatim Hills verbage from Lauren’s season 3 date with the model Gavin Beasley.
Fiona Chen- Lisa Love/Brent Bolthouse.
Jane’s boss, Fiona Chen is a hard cold woman who doesn’t smile like stone faced Lisa Love. She’s not snarky or cool enough to be Kelly Cutrone. But Fiona may have some traits of Heidi’s boss Brent Bolthouse because she really plays up the camera once the show starts filming her. We can’t imagine Lisa doing this, but Brent and his partner Sam Nazarian have said they like being on the show because it’s good for their business.
Trevor Lord- Adam DiVello.
Trevor discovered Jane, Adam discovered Lauren. Both Trevor and Adam are the big honchos behind the respective projects.
Dana- Liz Gately/Sophia Rossi.
Dana is a lady who works on the show. We think Sophia has a role similar to Dana’s in that she works on the sets. Liz Gately lives in New York and probably works out of an office.
Jane meets Hannah through her job at Fiona Chen Events and they subsequently become unexpecting good friends who share their personal lives, much like Lauren and Whitney.
If you’ve read the book, which stars do you think inspired what characters?
