I saw this bloody practice on the telly once & cried. I used to love Canada & even fancied moving there, since it has the cleanest air in the world & such beautiful scenery among other things. For shame…
Also, that photo of Jade should come with a warning. I nearly jumped. People who find her attractive must be smoking something. And Brody personifies douchiness, even in a photo aimed at campaigning for a good cause.
There’s just something funny about the phrase “Clubbing a baby seal”. I mean … seriously … IT IS!
The actual act of killing baby seals isn’t, I don’t think. What do dead baby seals provide? Who does this? And, why has an industry been built around clubbing baby seals? Why did we pass-up the baby otter?
Is the TV show The Hills in anyway related to “The Hills Have Eyes”?
While I 100% support this, I can’t say I support “The Hills” or anyone that comes with it. Seal’s aside, Jade & Brody are nothing, zero’s, nobodys, the list goes on. Seriously this matter needs and deserves far more attention than a bunch of reality tv “stars” can give it.
OK. First of all … there are more important issues to worry about regarding animals and the WORLD. People are only trying to protect the seals because they look cute … what about cows and other farm animals that people eat? What about hunting and sacrifice traditions in cultures around the world?
ALSO … the seals populations are increasing at an alarming rate and eating all of the fish. The reason for this is because humans killed the majority of the walrus populations in certain areas and walrus’ fend off seals! ALSO .. they don’t kills the babies! ALSO … it is a cultural tradition that happens for a short period of time and people need to have a license .. it ISN’T a free-for-all. PLUS … the media has quite a knack for showing dated videos in the cruelest light to tug at the audiences emotions on a cause that isn’t as important as so many others that receive NO attention.
What about the fish stocks that have been and are being depleted at an alarming rate? What, fish aren’t cute enough?
PS. I am a marine biology student.
Ok in response to the “marine biology” student– I am a vet tech working for one of the best marine mammal hospitals in the world. Your info is completely false and everything being said about what is happenening to the seals is true. I work with these animals everyday and have seen this happen first hand. I don’t know where u r getting ur shitty information but u r wrong. How long have u been a student? Yes student!!! I am a vet tech and have been doing this for 15 years. Good luck with ur false information
I don’t really think that after the seal hunt the seals would be rushed to the veterinarian? So if you are working on seals, I am sure that they aren’t specifically from the seal hunt.
And I am not disagreeing with what is happening during the seal hunt … it definitely does happen … but all of the facts about seal populations increasing are true.
“The harp seal question is entirely emotional. We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species.” -Jacques Cousteau
The seals portrayed on the Peta t-shirts are actually baby harp seals, and they aren’t allowed to be hunted. If ever you see a fluffy white seal and a picture of them being killed, it was banned in 1987 so it doesn’t happen anymore. Adult harp seals look nothing like that.
If anyone wants to read an article from more of an objective stand-point, to see from both perspectives, then go to:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/05/05/f-seal-hunt.html
Basically, there are a lot of things to consider … you can’t take a stand on something without being completely informed and rational. Peta is known to be irrational.
False information? I’m a studying conservation biologist (BSc Honours Co-op Marine Biology and Oceanography). YES a Biologist. We study population dynamics of organisms, especially fish and marine mammals in Northern Canada.
Here is some information:
Let me ask you this. Should protesters be more concerned over adorable seals, which grow in population 12% per year even with the seal hunt (according to the Committee on the Status of Enangered Wildlife in Canada: http://www.cosewic.gc.ca/eng/sct5/index_e.cfm), or should protesters be more concerned with the ever dwindling ground fish population (granted, they aren’t cute, but more important ecologically)?
Did we overfish? Yes! Is it bad? Yes! But my main issue is people are not focusing on the right animals. They always focus on the cute cuddly ones, not the ones that are more important to the ecosystem, like for example, cod.
If you have a rebuttal on the topic without information from biased anti-seal hunt websites, and only on peer reviewed, or scientifically reputable sources, then I will definitely keep this conversation going.
Keep up the good work Candace!
The difference between killing the cows/other farm animals & the seals – other than the incentives – is the humane way in which they are being killed. We don’t go to farms bashing these animals with clubs & dragging their bloodied bodies away, still alive to further suffer. Of course people care about what’s happening to them – it’s unnecessary & shameful, as all fur trade is. There’s a reason officials in the United States condemned the Canadian government & banned the practice, as have many other countries.
It’s not her best picture. She looked amazing on the Hills After Show appearance.
Jayde is so ditzy. I just watched the video, thinking she would show some mote of knowledge about the campaign. The quotes posted were enough to summarize the interview. Someone bright would have informed people about the numerous ways to develop a proactive role in the fight against the slaughter – i.e petitions, phone calls to their senate. She’s Canadian for goodness sake – she should know exactly who to seek out. It’s so informative to enlighten us about how it was, like, so bad to watch. Thanks, Jayde, for all the preparation you put into this! At least PETA has the information this vacuous girl couldn’t bother to research & impart for a cause she feels is so important.
Really? You’re going to trash someone for doing something good? Because you think she could have done more..this wasn’t up to your standards? That’s priceless…truly. She gave the website as people have no attention span. Her going on about which politicians to write too makes people go zzzzzz. What are you, 12? It’s a public service ad, and all you can say is “that bitch!!!” LOL!
Wow, I never thought I would get so involved in an internet discussion.
I do agree about Jayde and her ‘informative’ video. I’m impartial to her or who she is as a person … but she gave no solid information in her video and I feel as though she made a mockery of the issue. As I’ve mentioned BEFORE, they don’t kill the babies and haven’t in over two decades, so her PSA is basically just misinformation.
And Katya, what I did want to say is that I do agree that clubbing/slaughtering is an inhumane way to kill any animal … but I do also think that if we consider other things … like that chickens are put into coops with hundreds of other chickens, no room to move and, ultimately, actually become deformed … or maybe cows are slaughtered in a cruel way, but do we actually know?
I guess what I am trying to say with all of these posts is that people really should read about an issue and at least consider both stand points before lashing out against organizations, government, people etc. I also think that people assume that the seal hunt is JUST about the fur trade (yes, a large portion is) .. it is about tradition and culture that we can’t completely over-look. Just because the US banned something, doesn’t mean that Canada should instantaneously jump on the same band wagon.
I just can’t watch it, it makes me cry
me too i cnt stop thinking about it
i cant believe how cruel humans really are, i do not think anybody has the right to take another life its disgraceful, there are other ways to have protein in your diet, i hope these ppl go to hell.
